Poetically Or Politically Speaking
on February 18th, 2012 at 2:22 pmI use to write a lot of commentary about politics. I don’t do that much anymore. For one thing when I look at the Republican Party for example, it has already said more than enough about its lack of abilities than my words could possibly shine more light on. And I have a lot of faith in most people to understand a loser when they see one. Like the Newt, The Donald, The Mitt, Sounds like it could be a list of Disney characters, of course Washington DC is a circus anyway. And for the record I have no party affiliation, I simply vote for the lesser of the fools I have to choose from, no matter which party they fell from. I look at what the republicans have offered us and if they were a super bowl team I’d bet on the other team. This does not mean the other team has the best players or the smarter players just at this time the democrats are the lesser of the available fools. But as I said I rarely write about politics anymore. Perhaps I’m just a little burned out by flogging a stubborn donkey or trying to push and elephant to a watering hole.
I sometimes wonder if anyone in the District of Columbia, which probably thinks of its self as the political version Vatican City, holier than the voters. Really cares what we think or who we vote for. The game is going to be played on the White house lawn anyway. And we don’t even get to referee. And it gets more expensive every year just to watch the game.
Don’t misunderstand me, I do believe in voting. I believe that if we don’t vote we have no right to complain. I also believe in the three party zoo, Donkeys, Elephants, and if the Independents had a symbol which they don’t, but maybe they need one, it might be Chameleon. As a politician I don’t think you can be independent. Once you’re voted into the holy city, you have to keep changing colors or you just don’t get anything done. It’s you feed my Elephant peanuts and my Donkey hay and I’ll throw a few bugs at your Lizard.
People however, can be independent we have the power and the right to think. Thinking is what a lot of people don’t do. They say, I am an elephant or I am a donkey and I vote that way, I’ll lose the super bowl I’ll pay the price, but I’ll stand by my team and the hell with thought and reason. It was good enough for my parents and their parents then by gosh it’s good enough for me. But like I said I write very little these days about politics. That could and most likely will change.
A friend told me a while back that they thought I was more a poet than conventional writer. I told them poetry is hard, its gut wrenching and honest. In poetry you put your heart out on a plate of paper and offer it. Asking do you like me? Please don’t hurt me. I have exposed my deeper self and it’s frighting. I think the most sensitive people on this planet are those that can express poetically what lies deep inside them; they pull the truth up from inside, paint with a pallet of color so real they cannot be found in the real world, just in the heart of a poet.
I am lucky I have made friends with some people whose poetry will sink into my soul, and it gives me hope and light and a sense of being less alone. They have offered their hearts in prose and poetry and have touched a part of me they don’t even know. The poet offers more to the world than anyone can who writes only about politics. They give themselves honestly, openly, with love. And leave us feeling a rhythm of life worth living, even if it hurts.
So given the option of poetically or politically speaking, give me the poet any day.

Dan, I find that I am enjoying this political post as much as I do your poetry! Comparing D.C. to the Vatican is so apropos. We are watching a series called “The Borgias” and what we are finding is that old canard, the more things change, the more they stay the same.
